I have listened to all my psychs, many doctors, and my family tell me having a mental illness is like diabetes.
Mental illness is not at all like diabetes. A doctor can detect diabetes with a simple blood test. No psychiatrist can do the same with any mental illness.
There is a specific chemical imbalance that causes diabetes. None of my psychiatrists can prove a chemical imbalance is the reason I keep talking about the ways my family emotionally abuses me. No psychiatrist can prove a chemical imbalance causes me to say I was raped by a convicted pedophile.

I agree, because I think psychiatry is more about claiming to have a right to define what is real, and to have a right to subdue those who disagree, than it is about anything else. Psychiatry really can never be anything else than this, unless one defines the psychiatrist as God, all knowing and having an objective point of view (which is, I guess, what psychiatry does and is why psychiatrists think they're entitled to carry on as they do...)
The case is that no human being has the right to impose judgement on another's personal perception, and to change that person's situation based on such judgement. All one can do is offer help, that may of may not be accepted, and to leave alone those whose views (and or behavior) one cannot accept, instead of trying to force them to change their views and behaviors. As a brief and general presentation, this is what I think about why psychiatry is plain wrong in its fundaments, and in a lot of its practices. The only possible cases of correct psychiatric practice is if, like you talk about, there is some obvious physical malfunction -- like in diabetes -- where one sees that someone is lacking some part of the brain, or something like that, which was supposed to produce some kind of hormone or whatever, and one can give that hormone as a supplement.
But that is not at all what psychiatry is normally about, according to my impression (and I don't at all know too much about this topic, even though this long comment could suggest I think I do...) Psychiatry is about fiddling with stuff that people don't really understand how works, and the stuff psychiatry is fiddling with is so basic and central in an individual that one shouldn't fiddle with it when one doesn't really know what one is doing... Like one wouldn't let someone do brain surgery who don't know what they're doing...
